On Monday, February 17, Robert Bortins embarked on a crucial journey through Texas, advocating for the protection and promotion of Education Independence in a state that stands in the crosshairs of the School Choice movement. In a time when political leaders in Texas appear intent on reshaping the education system through a Marxist lens—casting free individuals as victims in an oppressive, binary framework—Bortins delivered a message of truth, hope, and liberty.
For decades, Texas families have enjoyed the freedom to explore educational options, with thousands choosing alternatives to the state-run public school system. Many of these families have worked tirelessly, often at great personal sacrifice, to privately fund their educational independence. The current push to undermine this freedom, based on a divisive narrative, is deeply insulting to the Texans who have long fought to protect their right to choose a non-public option.
Bortins’ trip began with a breakfast meeting with local Classical Conversations leaders, where he offered encouragement and support for their ongoing efforts to serve homeschooling families. From there, Bortins made his way to the Texas State Capitol, where he engaged with local media and had insightful discussions with members of the Texas House.
Next, on his way to Cedar Park for the main event, Bortins stopped at the first night of the TeenPact state class, interacting with students and parents as they participated in TeenPact’s immersive political training program, which offers a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the political process.
At the main event, over 150 attendees gathered to hear Bortins’ thought-provoking presentation, in which he discussed the Biblical and conservative principles that form the foundation of his opposition to certain school choice programs. While acknowledging that both he and Classical Conversations would financially benefit from such programs, Bortins made it clear that the organization remains steadfast in its commitment to Education Independence as a matter of core conviction.
