An economic and political system based on societal or collective ownership of the means of production, as opposed to private ownership. Production is typically organized through planning rather than market forces to promote equity by meeting social needs and distributing resources among all members of society. Historical attempts to implement socialism have ranged from democratic welfare states with mixed economies to authoritarian regimes with centrally planned systems; the outcomes vary significantly based on the degree of state control and democratic governance.
